The Germ Guardian AC5000 Air Purifier – Overview
The Germ Guardian brand of air purifiers has become one of the most popular and well respected on the US market today.
The Germ Guardian company has developed a reputation for making good quality air purifiers that don’t cost a fortune and the Ac5000 model is no exception.
If you are looking for an air purifier for a medium to large sized room that comes with a True-HEPA filter (and won’t emit dangerous levels of ozone gas into your home) for under $150, then the Germ Guardian AC5000 might be the best option.
Although it doesn’t come with some of the more advanced programming features that can be found on the $500+models, if you are just looking for an air purifier that is simple to operate, and which will do a good job of removing troublesome air particles from your home, then the Germ Guardian Ac5000 air purifier should be at the top of your list of machines to consider buying.
The Germ Guardian AC5000 Air Purifier – Main Features
The Germ Guardian AC5000 air purifier’s main features are as follows.
1. True-HEPA Filter
The Germ Guardian AC5000 comes fitted with a True-HEPA filter and a CADR rating of 125+.
For those of you that aren’t very experienced in choosing air purifiers, a True-HEPA filter is one that must be capable of removing at least 99.97% of airborne particles that are as small as 0.3 microns, which means that it is good enough to deal with most general dust, pet dander, pollen, and mold spores in your home.
Not all air purifiers come with a True-HEPA filter (especially at the cheaper end of the market) and so the Germ Guardian AC5000 is genuinely at the top of its class in terms of the quality of its main filtering process.
The HEPA filter will not last forever, though, and it will need to be replaced every 6-9 months. The replacement True-HEPA filters for the Germ Guardian AC5000 are not as expensive as some of the other brands, but this remains an added expense that you ought to consider prior to buying any specific air purifier.
When replacing the filter, just make sure that you buy the genuine one made by the Germ Guardian company rather than one made by an unauthorised 3rd party seller.
2. The Germ Guardian AC5000’s Other Filters
Aside from its True-HEPA filter, the Germ Guardian AC5000 air purifier also comes with additional filters that use different scientific processes to remove other airborne particles from the home.
There are 2 of additional types of filter to ensure that the full range of air particles are targeted.
Whilst the True-HEPA filter takes care of the most common household allergens, there is an activated carbon filter, which is designed to remove the sorts of common household odors that can be caused by pets, smoking and cooking.
Finally, there is a UV-C Light Filter that works with Titanium Dioxide to kill airborne bacteria, viruses, germs and mold spores.
Although, the AC5000 uses 3 different filtration processes you will only actually need to buy a single replacement filter unit when the old filter stops working properly.
Be vigilant when choosing a replacement filter for the Germ Guardian AC5000, or any other air purifier. You can find 3rd party sellers offering cheap replacement activated carbon filters, for example, but I would strongly advise against buying them since you should be buying the authentic combined filter instead. This will ensure that the filter is suitable for the air purifier, works properly, and that your warranty remains valid.
Don’t worry about having to keep track of how long the filter has been in use for, or having to guess when it needs to be replaced based upon a visual examination of it. The Germ Guardian AC5000 comes with a very handy “filter replacement indicator”, which will tell you exactly when it is time to buy a replacement filter.
There is also an indicator to tell you when to replace the UV-C filter light bulb.
3. The Germ Guardian AC5000 is Ozone-Free
Many people are quite understandably worried about the prospect of an air purifier using particle-removal processes that cause lots of potentially harmful ozone gas to be released into your home environment.
There is plenty of scientific evidence to prove that Ozone gas can be hazardous to human health and, consequently, I certainly won’t be recommending any air purifiers that produce harmful quantities of ozone gas.
Ultimately, there is absolutely no point in trying to alleviate the symptoms of asthma, allergies, or simply removing unpleasant odors from your home using a machine that is simply going to replace those particles with gas particles that are even more harmful to your health.
The good news is that the Germ Guardian AC5000 air purifier is Ozone-Safe so you don’t need to worry about this issue at all.
4. The Germ Guardian AC5000’s Room Coverage
The Germ Guardian AC5000 measures 28 inches in height, looks okay without being ultra-stylish, and is suitable for use in rooms that are up to 193 square feet in size.
It will not, therefore, be suitable for very large open-plan rooms, but will be perfectly suited to medium or large rooms.
If you need an air purifier to use in a room that is no more than about 155 square feet, you could save a few dollars and take a look at the Germ Guardian AC4825 instead.
5. How Noisy is the Germ Guardian AC5000 Air Purifier?
There is no such thing as a completely silent air purifier as they all need to draw large amounts of air through their filters and this inevitably leads to some noise emissions.
The Germ Guardian AC5000 has 3 speed options and each one emits a different amount of noise.
The lowest speed setting on the AC5000 is ultra-quiet and you ought to be able to sleep perfectly whilst using the machine in this mode.
The general consensus amongst those who have bought and reviewed this air purifier is that only the highest setting is likely to cause any significant amount of white noise. You ought to be able to sleep with this air purifier on its lowest setting without any problems if you need to use it in a bedroom.
